Eight Reasons to Love Australia

I would first like to start by apologising profusely for my lack of posting! I promised that I'd post more after exams ended as I have had more free time, but I decided, instead, to spend those hours with my friends. A win for my social life however a loss for my blog! Anyway, I'm currently on holiday in Sydney, and so for this post I have decided to entail all things amazing and Australian. Whether it's a certain fashionista or a hot and popular trend, here's my list of all things to love in/from Australia this winter (summer for all your Northern Hemisphere-ers!)...

1. Miranda Kerr
Miranda Kerr out and about
Perhaps it's just me but this woman is incredible. She's gorgeous and sexy, has a successful career, and a beautiful family to match. What's not to envy? Strictly speaking fashion now though, her style is flawless. The 29-year-old model can be chic, flirtatious, elegant or casual, and paired with her dazzling smile and perfect body, this mother-of-one is unstoppable. Miranda matches her outfits with ease and pairs them with great accessories; or in some cases with her adorable son, Flynn, her little pooch, Frankie, or her equally hot husband, Orlando Bloom. Her natural beauty has graced catwalks and photoshoots worldwide, and her status as one of Victoria's Secret's most loved and famous "Angels" has men wanting her and women wanting to be her. This leggy brunette is definitely one for Australia to be proud of!

2. Fluoro Fun
Neon street style
The current cold and windy Australian temperatures have yet to put a stop to the Northern Hemisphere’s summer vibes, with neon colours showing up everywhere. Designed in the form of shirts, skirts, accessories and more, these crazy colours brighten up any outfit and look great paired with dark colours to really make them pop. Try some detailed neon prints with solid colours for a fun and flirty look, or only wear a couple of neon accessories so as to not overdo on the fluorescent hues.
A variety of hot neon pieces!

3. The Hemsworth Babes
Chris Hemsworth
The Hemsworth brothers are two up and comers who are not to be messed with. Liam, 22, and Chris, 28, have both recently starred in some of the biggest movies in the world right now. Liam plays Gale in the exciting Hunger Games trilogy, in which the first movie came out at the end of March. Chris, on the other hand, plays Thor in the epic superhero movie, The Avengers, and also plays the huntsman in the incredible remake of the popular classic, Snow White and The Huntsman. Not only are they talented; these boys are hot! With their muscular bodies, great smiles and beautiful eyes, the boys do of course attract plenty of female attention. Unfortunately the brothers are in fact taken, with Liam recently engaged to Miley Cyrus, and Chris married to Elsa Pataky, with 2-month-old daughter, India Rose.

4. The Best Beaches
Australian beaches have been loved and favored for decades; with their beautiful white sand, blue oceans and a variety of fun water sports for all ages. With hundreds of beaches, such as Bondi and Manly, and hundreds of people there each day, Australia’s beaches are the perfect places to relax, enjoy your surroundings and meet new people. In the summer, the sun and sand are perfect for tanning and playing games along the beach such as volleyball or cricket. Those a bit wilder can dare the cool waters to go swimming among the waves. These waves can get pretty big, but are a whole lot of fun to swim under and wade over. They also attract water sports lovers, especially surfers, which can be a great activity to have a go at or just watch. As it’s winter now, most are reluctant to even approach the ocean. However, if you can brave it, the beach can also just be fun for taking beautiful photos or playing games on the sand. Also, for something even more adventurous and unforgettable, head over to The Great Barrier Reef to scuba dive or snorkel among the beautiful coral reef. Australian beaches have been rated among the best in the world, and are certainly worth visiting to escape the freezing winters in your country come December!

5. Boost Juice Bars
This delicious juice bar has shops all over Australia and Asia. They make healthy and completely natural drinks, like juices, smoothies and crushes.

Perfect for cooling down in the heat, or just for a refresher after a long day of shopping (which has been happening to me a lot recently), Boost juices come in all flavours and appeal to all ages. The drinks come in different sizes for the best possible size for you, and are definitely worth their relatively cheap cost (often between $4 - $7.) A personal favourite of mine is Berry Crush; a cold and sweet smoothie minus the yoghurt/milk for a slightly healthier option (less fat as there are no dairy products.) Boost also has a variety of even healthier options, such as wheatgrass shots. These are only small, yet effectively target areas of your body, for example your immune system, to keep you fit and healthy all day. Juices and smoothies are a tasty way to keep yourself hydrated, and Boost excels at this!

6. Bambi Northwood-Blyth
Bambi is one model you surely will have seen before. With her signature eyebrows and grungy style, she is a uniquely stunning girl. Originally from Melbourne, this 21–year-old has walked on catwalks worldwide and starred in numerous campaigns. What makes Bambi stand out in particular is her chameleon-like ability to transform into all sorts of personalities. She can stay true to her rock n' roll side and be daring, or she can appear sweet and girly whilst frolicking in gardens or the ocean for photoshoots. Bambi has a great body too, standing at 5'7" with a  fabulously slim figure. Her career took off in Australia in 2010, when she walked in several runway shows and appeared on a few magazine covers. Now Bambi is working in the USA for Elite modelling agency, continuing to blossom in the fashion world as an "it" model.

7. Knit Tops/Sweaters
Both plain and patterned knit tops to keep you warm this winter
Sweaters have been seen all over Australia this winter, both in stores and in street style. What better way to keep yourself nice and toasty than with woven cottons and wools? Paired with jeans or tights, these comfy tops look effortlessly cool and laid back. They can, however, also look chic with a nice blazer or jacket and some dazzling jewelry. There are hundreds of different knits among Australian stores right now, and hundreds more being worn by everyday Australian girls. They look great on all ages and skin tones, as you can get them chunky or slim fit, neon or monochrome. It's also lots of fun to wear these in demand tops that have patterns, prints or slogans on them to bring a little more youth to the look. To make your outfit a little more chic, wear them on top of sheer shirts for a very British style. Even the boys down under are in love with these sweaters, pairing them with jeans and some sneakers. Perfect for the wintertime, these knits go with almost anything and are very popular in Australia right now.

8. Hamish & Andy
There's no doubt that these two guys are hilarious. If you haven't already heard them on 2day FM (the best radio station in Sydney!) in their own segment of the Hamish & Andy Show, or watched them in their hit show, Hamish & Andy Gap Year, LOOK THEM UP NOW. Amongst my favourite entertainers, Hamish Blake, 30, and Andy Lee, 28, are comic geniuses. Their radio show covers a variety of funny topics, all discussed and mingled with some of Australia's best songs. They'll comment on current events worldwide and also make parodies out them, in particular making their own funny little songs to entertain people of all ages. Their show also works well to bring out their great senses of humor. Half way through season two, they're currently filming all over Europe. The show is hosted in London, and then broadcasted in Australia on Thursdays by the two comedians in a talk-show manner, replaying back what funny things they did and filmed throughout that past week. In an attempt to not give away too much (in case you do in fact take my recommendation of watching the show yourself! [episodes can be found on youtube]), the show also has similar segments each week. Most weeks they'll have a "Hamish vs. Andy" challenge, in which the two men go head to head in all sorts of bizarre competitions, including kissing and translation races. They will also often film "The Ultimate Wingman" segment, in which Hamish attempts to hook Andy up with dozens of women in silly and quirky ways. These guys are great, and are definitely worth at the very least looking up on Youtube!

I hope you liked finding a little bit more out about Australia! These are just a select few things that make my home country a truly amazing place, and I'm sure you'll agree with me when I say, what's not to love!?

"Prom" Night 2012

Hi everyone! I'm so sorry for not posting in ages, but I've been really busy with exams recently. Thankfully though, I am finally done! To celebrate the end of IGSCE and commence the beginning of IB, our school had a formal, as they do every year. I guess you would consider it "Prom," hence the title, however our school isn't really American enough to go for the cliche title. It was lots of fun; we danced, socialised, ate and relaxed. Afterwards there was an after party for us to properly let loose ;) so that of course was also quite good! Below are some pictures from the night, enjoy :)

Getting ready at the salon!
My g-friends and I going for the typical prom poses!
Dress from SEDUCE, Clutch from Muse, Cuff from Topshop, Ring from a shop in Ion, Heels from Aldo
Everyone at the pre-formal celebrations!
While this post is short and sweet, now that I've finished grade 10 I'll be posting more! I have a couple weeks til' I actually go overseas on holidays, so hopefully that'll mean I'll have lots of time to come on Blogspot (:

Spring Trends I've Adored

Spring 2012 has put a lot of new trends and styles into the spotlight; whether they've been brought back from the past, reinvented in a whole new way, or inspired from the current day and future. This year's line up involved a lot of prints, ladylike silhouettes and geometric patterns. Brought back to life was the styling's of the 1920's, flapper dresses and all. Sporty cuts clash with accentuating peplums, whereas tribal prints from right out of Africa go hand in hand with bright and bold prints. Pretty shades of pastels are featured in several collections, and dreamy underwater designs are embedded in others. Last but not least, "ab fab" outfits appeared again and again with their daring and sexy cuts.

1. Pulchritudinous in Peplum
The flared peplum is the definition of elegance and femininity, accentuating a woman's curves with a formal approach. Designed in dresses, skirt and tops, the peplum style appeared on countless catwalks. The outfits came in bright pops of colour, bold prints, cool metallic or classic black, proving their chameleon-like grace and effortlessness. This style is best worn on petite girls as they highlight and create more bodacious curves, and can be paired with patterns or just simple solid colours.

2. Bare Bellies
If you've got it, flaunt it! This season's gradual return to summer warmth has brought back the cropped and bustier tops. These ab-tastic tops came in all patterns, prints, shapes and materials. Exciting prints, like Dolce & Gabanna's pepper print, make for a fun outfit, whereas lace makes a look elegant and timeless. Sailor stripes bring a casual yet classic approach, leather toughens up the attire and gives a rebellious edge, and curved shapes and cut outs add a pinch of sex appeal. If you've got a flat tummy and the confidence to own it, this garment is perfect for you.

3. Into The Wild
This season's trends were inspired not from Europe and America like the origins of the brands, but right out from African culture. Aztec prints owned the runways, particularly Michael Kors' safari-esque collection. Designed in either bright or earthy colours, animal and tribal patterns work best as a single statement piece paired with a simple outfit.

4. Lively Prints
Vivid colours blended with quirky or floral prints were the perfect match to bring some colour back into fashion after winter's much more muted hues. Prints were paired together to make one whole dazzling look, or combined with basic pieces to create a more toned down yet still bold outfit. While you mightn't quite be able to afford these killer threads above, you can settle for some of the equally stunning pieces below!

5. Underwater Utopia
Designers were influenced by the whimsical and relaxing theme of the ocean, infusing beautiful hues of blue, and saltwater creatures and plants into their pieces. Alexander McQueen's coral dress reflected the beauty of the ocean's foliage, whereas Mary Katrantzou took photographs of underwater scences and printed them onto her dresses. Other designers illuminated their pieces with shell-like patterns, or painted either soft blue waves or big crashing waves with darker colours. These pieces are perfect to ring in the beginnings of summer days spent relaxing by the beach.

6. Pretty Pastels
Pale colours make an outfit delicate and feminine, mixing especially well with floral patterns - perfect for spring! Louis Vuitton was most famous this season for their pastel, floral and feathery dresses matched with fresh faced beauties. Pastel pieces came in all shapes and sizes; as short body con dresses, blazers and trousers, or long flowy dresses. Pale colours look great on most skin tones; just beware of more out there colours like yellow for lighter skin colours. Pair these divine hues with other feminine pieces for a classic lady-like outfit, or match them with metallics to give them a bit of edge.

7. Sporty Spice
Whereas some designers opted for pretty looks, others brought out the casual and chicness of sportswear in their collections. Michael Kors' safari style still maintained a sporty edge, and Victoria Beckham's collection incorporated chic hoodies with skirts and sandals. Geometric prints and cuts were designed with sneakers or clean cut strappy shoes to highlight the build of an athletic body. Don't be afraid to wear some more casual pieces so long as you combine it with something chic or a bit more formal.

8. Great Gatsby Girls
Collections are almost always influenced each season by an era in the past. This spring, it was the glamorous flapper dresses of the 1920's that made an impression on designers. Dubbed 'The Great Gatsby' style, a book written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the twenties was a decade of sophisticated and conservative party dresses. These elegant garments have this year been reinvented into a more sexy look, with metallic tones, deep plunged necklines, shear fabrics and cut out designs. These styles are traditionally worn with headbands, glitzy clutches and heels, and have stayed quite similar through the years. The modern version, however, involves less hair accessories, more strappy heels and the same level of glam - great for parties and big events.

I hope you've enjoyed this seasons trends as much as I have! Designers never seem to shy away from past styles, as they invent new ways to present these trends each year. I, personally, have definitely gotten into the pastel colours, despite not owning that many pieces. I've also loved bustier and crop tops, and own several myself. I would love to own a peplum dress or skirt, though I don't have one yet, and I think bold prints are unique and fun, especially when worn to parties!

Sophie's Wishlist

I have a love for shopping which unfortunately cannot always be quenched due to my lack of millions of dollars. While some of these items are relatively affordable, others are not quite within my price range. So, without further a due, here is my wishlist (though I really am sure there's loads more things I have yet to discover which I'll love)...

A lot of these beautiful garments I've found on Tumblr, so it's rather difficult to track down where each comes from. However, some are from Polyvore and so are luckily quite easy to find! For details of where each item is from go to my Polyvore set here. Hope you like it!

Favourite Pieces of Jewelry

My beautiful necklace just arrived! This is the one I've been talking about for a while now, the one which I got for my birthday from my grandparents. I am in love. The colours are beautiful and striking, and the length of the chain and the size of the crystal itself are both perfect, especially for the dress I'm wearing to my brother's graduation, which is when I'll be wearing it first!

Crystal Druzy Necklace, from Five and Two (website here)

My new obsession with this necklace has inspired me to create a post with all of my favourite jewelry. I'm a big fan of rings, while I mightn't wear them all that often. I also love necklaces, and a few bracelets here and there can be nice too. I, unfortunately, don't have my ears pierced (they used to be but then closed over... it's a long story), so I can't obsess over earrings anytime soon. I just love how jewelry can transform an ordinary outfit into something special, something that little bit more elegant or fun or formal or chic. Here are all of my favourites, in no particular order...
